The loss to Fresno State was the first in a rough three-game stretch for New Mexico. Next on the itinerary is a road game against Utah State and a home game against San Diego State—both of whom have only lost one game this season.
It’s possible that New Mexico doesn’t win another game until mid-November, since they’ll surely be considered underdogs in each of the next two games.
They didn’t show any signs of hope in their blowout loss to Fresno State, who held them to only 280 yards of total offense. Meanwhile, Fresno State racked up 433 total yards.
New Mexico quarterback Sheriron Jones had an uneventful day (what else is new?) with 132 passing yards, one touchdown and one interception. The lack of a consistent passing attack was coupled with the fact that the Lobos couldn’t move the ball on the ground against Fresno State’s defensive front. Senior running back Tyrone Owens has only eclipsed 100 yards rushing in one game so far this season.
He had 19 carries for 83 yards against Fresno State, which was actually pretty decent considering his past performances.
New Mexico isn’t the only team lacking in the productivity department in the offensive backfield.
Utah State has also struggled to move the ball on the ground consistently. Their committee approach to the running back situation has been hit-and-miss with a shared workload between Darwin Thompson and Gerold Bright. Utah State generally splits the work early on and eventually lingers on whichever player has the hot hand on any given night.
It was Thompson in last Saturday’s game against Wyoming, when he rushed for 109 yards and two touchdowns. Success on the ground was paramount to the Aggies’ success in a game where quarterback Jordan Love was having his worst statistical performance of the season. Future games could call for a similar effort, especially if the quarterback is only contributing 53 passing yards and one interception. It was literally the Thompson show on offense as the Aggies survived a near-upset loss.
The team also got a huge boost from special teams.
New Mexico looked completely overwhelmed in their lopsided loss to Fresno State, leaving little hope things will be any different on Saturday against Utah State. Jones isn’t capable of carrying the load when things go south, and the likelihood of there being a reliable running game to settle things down is slim to none.
As shown in the win over Wyoming, Love doesn’t have to be great for the Aggies to win a football game. They also have the option of falling back on their two-headed monster at running back. Thompson and Bright will have a great opportunity to chew up yards on the ground against a Lobos defense allowing 169.1 rushing yards per game.
The secondary for New Mexico has also showed some holes over the course of the season. They just gave up 280 yards passing and three touchdowns to Fresno State quarterback Marcus McMaryion, who also finished the game with a 92.5 QBR.
For all of Love’s shortcomings, he is still capable of breaking out for a big game every now and then. He threw for 322 yards and five touchdowns against UNLV a little over a week ago. I expect him to have another sensational performance against New Mexico’s defense, while Utah State’s offense forces Jones into critical mistakes that ultimately cost the Lobos the game.
